I love Costco, I just renewed our membership. But unfortunately I am a compassionate consumer and they do not carry a lot of products that fit the bill. A couple of the environmentally friendly detergents rank high on the toxicity scale according to the Environmental Working Group’s SkinDeep app, for example. ANYWAY, that said, Costco provides incredible value when it comes to things like paper towels, plastic wrap (which I shouldn’t even be using anyway but that’s besides the point for now), tin foil, toilet paper, tissues, napkins, contact solution, band-aids, Advil, etc. Those are the things I go there for. I think the value savings even outweighs the Costco membership dues. Another tip for readers is related to this – when you are at the grocery store, check the unit price on the sizes of products you’re buying. Even if the price of a bigger size of say vinegar or olive oil (anything, really, just check the weight versus the price difference of a bigger size) is slightly higher, the unit price difference is often worth it – you are essentially paying less money for it to last you longer. Thanks for posting!

Butter is soooo expensive. Get it at costco for half the price. Also, for those with babies (hint hint) organic 1% is a great deal since our 3 yr old drinks a gallon a day. I buy the 25lb bag of flour and sugar at costco and put the excess in huge restaurant style tubs. I hate buying that stuff and now i have it all the time for half the price. Same goes for rice.

I’m totally implementing the idea about freezing the pre-measured rare ingredients. It happens a lot to me when I buy fresh herbs.

Also, we save money buy freezing ultra ripe fruits. Bananas (w/o the peel) for future banana bread. It’s the only way to make it with less sugar. Strawberries for future smoothies. My favorite is freezing ripe grapes. We eat them by themselves and they are so refreshing. They are like individual balls of grape sorbet…so delicious! This is a huge money savings because we have a large family and tend to buy produce in bulk. Sometimes, not even we can finish everything on time..
